The farewell letter of Commandante Ernesto Che Guevara was read by Fidel Castro on October 3rd, 1965 in Havana, in front of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party and before the cameras. After his return from Africa in February 1965, the Che disappeared from the public scene without official explanation, causing questions in Cuba and especially abroad. The rumors evoked disputes between Fidel and the Che, and even a real purge. This letter, written by the hand of the Che, proves the unfounded character of these calumnies, which the reactionaries (and pseudo-revolutionaries) continue to propagate to this day in order to discredit Cuba.

Even before the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, Che, a convinced internationalist, had pledged himself alongside Fidel Castro on the condition of being free to pursue his revolutionary and anti-imperialist struggle under other heavens after the Victory in Cuba. His experiences in Congo and Bolivia were known only after his death, with the publication of his War Diaries by the Cuban government.

[...] There is an absence in our central committee of one who possess all the merits and all the virtues in the highest degree to belong to it and who, however, is not along the members of the central committee. 

Around this the enemy had been able to weave a thousand conjectures. The enemy has tried to confuse and to sow discord and doubt. And patiently, because it was necessary to wait, we have waited. That is the difference between the revolutionary and the counterrevolutionary, between the revolutionary and the imperialist. We revolutionaries know how to wait. We know how to have patience. We never despair and the reactionaries, the counterrevolutionaries, the imperialists continue in perennial desperation.

They live in perennial anguish, in a perennial lying of the most ridiculous, of the most childish. When we read some of the things about those officials, come of those Yankee senators, one asks: “But how is it possible that this gentlemen is not in a stable instead of belonging to what is called a “Congress.” (applause) Some of them speak veritable barbarities. Any they have a tremendous habit of lying. They cannot live without lying. They live in anguish. If the revolutionary does something, which is what Cuba was always going, such as that to which I referred at the beginning, they see truculent things, terrible things, a plan behind all that. How ridiculous. In what fear, they live.

One asks oneself: “Do they believe that?: “Do they believe that?: “Could they believe all they say?” “Do they have a need to believe all they say or can they not live without believing all they say or do they say all that they do not believe?” It is difficult. It would be a question for doctors and psychologists. What do they have in this minds? What anguish is that? They see a maneuver in everything, a truculent, dark, terrible plan. And they do no know that there is not better tactic, nor a better strategy than to fight with clean weapons, than to fight with the truth, because those are the only weapons which inspire trust. They are the only weapons which inspire faith. They are the only weapons which inspire safety, moral dignity. And it has been with those weapons that we revolutionaries have been vanquishing and crushing our enemies.

You will never here a lie from the mouth of a revolutionary. There are weapons which do not benefit any revolutionary, and no serious revolutionary needs to resort to lies–ever. His weapon is reason, (word indistinct), the truth, the ability to have an idea, a purpose, a position; in short, the moral spectacle of our adversaries in truly lamentable. And thus, the diviners, the interpreters, the specialists in Cuban affairs, and the electronic brains have been working incessantly to solve this mystery, whether Ernesto Guevara has been purges, (applause) whether Ernesto Guevara was ill, whether Ernesto Guevara had had differences, and other questions of the same ilk.

Naturally, the people have confidence. The people have faith, but enemies will say these things, especially abroad, to slander him and the communist regime, dark, terrible things: men disappear, they do not leave a trace; they do not leave prints; there is no explanation; and we told the people at this time, when the people began to note this absence, that in due time we would talk. We would have some reasons to wait, we are developing surrounded by the forces of imperialism.

The world is not living in normal conditions. As long as the criminal bombs of Yankee imperialists are falling on the people of Vietnam, we cannot say that we are living under normal conditions. When more than 100,000 Yankee soldiers land there to try to smash the liberation movement, when the soldiers of imperialism land in a republic which has equality of rights, judicially, as do all the rest of the republic of the worlds, as in Santo Domingo, to trample its sovereignty, (applause) the world if not living under normal conditions. When around our country, the imperialists are training mercenaries and organizing vandalic attacks, in the most unpunished manner, as in the case of (few words indistinct), when the imperialists threaten to intervene in any country of Latin America or of the world, we are not living under normal conditions.

And when we were fighting in clandestine conditions against the Batista tyranny, we revolutionaries did not live in normal conditions. We had to adjust to the struggle. In the same way, although the revolutionary power exists in our country, in regard to the realities of the world, we do not live in normal conditions, and we shall have to adjust to this situation. And to explain this, we are going to read a letter here, in handwriting, here copied by typewriter, from Comrade Ernesto Guevara, (applause) which is self-explanatory.

I thought of telling the story of our friendship and our comradeship, how it began, under what conditions it began and how it developed, but it is not necessary. I am going to restrict myself to reading the letter. It says:

Havana–The date was not written down because this letter was to be read at the moment we felt it most convenient, but keeping to strict reality, it was delivered on 1 April of this year, exactly six months and two days ago, and it says the following:

“Havana, Year of Agriculture [1965].

Fidel, 

At this moment I remember many things: the day I met you in the house of Maria Antonia, when you asked me to come with you [to participate in the Cuban Revolution] and all the tension of the preparations.

One day they came by to ask who should be notified in case of death, and the real possibility of this (death) struck us all. Thereafter, we knew it was true, and that in a revolution one triumphs or dies, if it is true. Many comrades fell on the road to victory.

Today, everything has a less dramatic tone, because we are more mature; but the event repeats itself. I feel like I have accomplished the part of my duty that tied me to the Cuban revolution in its territory, and I take my leave of you, of the comrades, of your people who is now also mine.

I formally resign my positions in the leadership of the Party, my position as Minister, my rank of Commander and my Cuban citizenship. Nothing legal binds me no longer to Cuba, except the links of another kind that cannot be broken, unlike titles or ranks.

Reviewing my past life, I believe I have worked with sufficient honesty and dedication to consolidate the revolutionary triumph. My only fault of some seriousness, is not having had more confidence in you from the first moments in the Sierra Maestra and not having been able to discern quickly your qualities of leader and revolutionary.

I have lived magnificent days, and I felt at your side the pride of belonging to our people in the luminous yet sad days of the Caribbean [Missile] crisis. Rarely, a head of state was as bright as you were in these circumstances. I am also proud to have followed you without hesitation, to have fully adhered to your way of thinking, and to have been able to see and appreciate the dangers and principles the way you did.

Other nations of the world summon my modest efforts of assistance. I can do what is denied to you due to your responsibility at the head of Cuba, and the time has come to part.

Know that I do it with a mixture of joy and pain. I leave here the purest of my hopes as a constructor and the dearest of all the ones I love. And I leave a people who adopted me like a son. It tears a part of my soul. On the new battlefields, I will bring the faith that you inculcated me, the revolutionary spirit of my people, the feeling of accomplishing the most sacred of duties: fighting against imperialism wherever it may be. It comforts and heals advantageously the deepest wounds.

I repeat once again that I free Cuba from all responsibility, except that which emanates from its example. If one day, in other lands, occurs to me the fateful hour (of martyrdom), my last thought will be for this people and especially for you.

Thank you for your teachings and your example to whom I will try to stay true to the last consequence of my actions. I was always in total agreement with the foreign policy of our Revolution, and I still am. Wherever I find myself, I will always feel upon me the responsibility of being a Cuban revolutionary, and I will behave as such. I leave nothing material to my children and to my wife, and this does not grieve me. I am happy that it is so. I ask nothing for them, because I know that the State will give them what they need to live and get an instruction.

I have much to say to you and to our people, but I feel that it is useless, because words cannot express what I would like to say, and it's not worth blackening more paper.

Until victory, always.

Speech in Santiago de Cuba on November 30th, 1964, on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the uprising of the city led by Frank País

[...] Our victorious struggle had two consequences: the awakening of the peoples of America, who saw that one could undertake a Revolution (and triumph), could experience how a revolution could be made, find that all channels (to the popular uprising) were not closed and see that it was not necessary to constantly receive the blows of the exploiters, and that this path towards emancipation was not as long and arduous as could imagine or think some party leaders who fight hard against the oligarchies and against imperialism in every country.

At the same time, we have opened the eyes of imperialism. Imperialism has also started preparing to drown in blood the new Cubas that may emerge. And before he died, Kennedy had already said they would not admit new Cubas in the continent. And this was repeated by his successors, who are wolves from the same litter, so we should not think that they could have a different philosophy. Not only did they reiterate [Kennedy's words], they also demonstrated their intention to carry out this action, to accomplish it not only in America, but in all countries of the world in which the struggle was created, where the revolutionary struggle developed.

They tried to kill Algeria, but Algeria won its freedom. Today, they try to liquidate the people of Vietnam, but the people of Vietnam is stronger than them, and Vietnamese people continue day after day to record new victories over imperialism, forcing him to pay with the blood of [US] soldiers, and paying himself a tribute [of martyrs] to the huge amount of casualties caused by imperialism against the people of South Vietnam. And the struggle continues and will continue until victory. This revolution began even before ours in North Vietnam, and was consolidated before we could arrive triumphantly in Havana. But you have to keep fighting. 

Laos is in the same condition. And in Africa, there are many people who have taken this (revolutionary) path. With varying degrees of success, but they took that route. And Portuguese Guinea triumph in its struggles.

But today, the memory more present, more poignant than any other is certainly that of the Congo and Lumumba. Today, in this Congo so far from us and yet so present, there is a story that we need to know and an experience that we should learn from. The other day, the Belgian paratroopers stormed the city of Stanleyville. They slaughtered a large number of citizens and, finally, after having regrouped and murdered them under the statue of Professor Lumumba, they stole the statue of the former President of Congo. 

This tells us two things: first, the bestiality of imperialism. A bestiality that has no fixed borders or does not belong to a particular country. Hitler's hordes were bestial, as are North Americans today, as are the Belgian paratroopers, as were the French imperialists in Algeria. For it is the very nature of imperialism to demean men to their wildest impulses, to turn them into blood-hungry beasts, willing to slaughter, to murder, to destroy until the last picture of a revolutionary, a supporter of a regime that fell under their boot, or who fights for his freedom. 

And this statue to the memory of Lumumba, today destroyed, but which will be rebuilt tomorrow, reminds us of the tragic history of this martyr of the revolution of the world, and the fact that you can never trust imperialism, not even for the least thing, absolutely nothing. Under the banner of the United Nations in the Congo, Lumumba was assassinated. And these are the United Nations whom the Americans claim should inspect our territory! These same United Nations! [...]

And we have the ever increasing satisfaction to see that the name of Cuba crosses through the fields of America, and also through the fields of other countries of the world who are fighting for their freedom, always meaning the same thing: the image of what can be achieved through the revolutionary struggle, the hope for a better world, the ideal for which it is worth risking one's life, sacrificing unto death on the battlefield in all continents of the world. [...] Now, yes, History will count with the poor of America, with the exploited and humiliated in Latin America, who decided to start writing themselves, forever, their history.

And this wave of indignant resentment, of trampled rights and justice reclaimed begins to rise from the lands of Latin America, and this wave will not stop. [...] Question: One of the top news stories these days is the US decision to shut down several Russian diplomatic facilities, which in essence amounts to another instance of seizing diplomatic property.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has used the words “seizure” and “searches”. You have not said anything on this matter so far. Will you comment on it now? Will Russia respond to all this? If so, what response would it be?

Vladimir Putin: The thing is that we have agreed with our partners that Russia and the United States should have parity in terms of personnel or diplomats in their missions in each other’s country. I believe there were 1,300 American diplomats working in Russia and 455 Russian diplomats in the United States. We have balanced the figure.

I would like you to take note of the fact that this figure, 455 Russian diplomats working in the United States, also includes (provisionally) the 155 Russians working at the United Nations. Strictly speaking, they are not diplomats accredited at the US Department of State but diplomats working at an international organisation.

When the United States wanted the UN to be headquartered in New York, it pledged to properly ensure its operation. So strictly speaking, the number of American diplomats in Moscow should be not 455 but 155 fewer, if we are talking about parity.

So, we reserve the right to take a new decision on the number of American diplomats in Moscow. We will not do this immediately but will see how things develop.

The Americans had the right to reduce the number of our diplomatic offices. It is another matter altogether that they have done this in way that was absolutely uncivil. This does not do reflect well on our American partners.

It is difficult to talk to people who confuse Austria and Australia. But there is nothing we can do about this; this is the level of political culture among part of the American establishment.

As for the American people, America is truly a great nation if the Americans can put up with so many politically uncivilised people.

Question: Mr President, you have already mentioned that you touched upon the issue of the DPRK when you spoke to the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of South Korea…

Vladimir Putin: Excuse me, but, with regard to the buildings and structures, this is unprecedented. As a graduate of the St Petersburg University law department, I, or any other lawyer for that matter, can tell you that property rights consist of three elements: the right to own, use, and dispose of such property.

The United States stripped Russia of the right to use our property, which is a clear violation of Russia’s property rights. So, to begin with, I will ask our Foreign Ministry to file a lawsuit. We will see how effectively the much-lauded American judicial system works. [...]

Question: Returning to the DPRK, what is your position? It looks like neither talks (the diplomatic process), nor threats, nor sanctions work. How can the DPRK situation be resolved?

Vladimir Putin: This is the simplest question today.

I discussed this with my colleagues in private, but I do not think there is any need to conceal anything here. I will repeat what I said in private and official conversations, and, in fact, what everyone should be aware of and anyone with common sense should understand.

Everyone remembers well what happened to Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Hussein abandoned the production of weapons of mass destruction. Nonetheless, under the pretext of searching for these weapons, Saddam Hussein himself and his family were killed during the well-known military operation.

Even children died back then. His grandson, I believe, was shot to death. The country was destroyed, and Saddam Hussein was hanged. Listen, everyone is aware of it and everyone remembers it. North Koreans are also aware of it and remember it. Do you think that following the adoption of some sanctions, North Korea will abandon its course on creating weapons of mass destruction?

Russia condemns these exercises on the part of North Korea. We believe they are provocative in nature. However, we cannot forget about what I just said about Iraq, and what happened later in Libya. Certainly, the North Koreans will not forget it.

Sanctions of any kind are useless and ineffective in this case. As I said to one of my colleagues yesterday, they will eat grass, but they will not abandon this programme unless they feel safe.

What can ensure security? The restoration of international law. We need to advance towards dialogue between all parties concerned. It is important for all participants in this process, including North Korea, not to have any thoughts about the threat of being destroyed; on the contrary, all sides to the conflict should cooperate.

In this environment, in this situation, whipping up military hysteria is absolutely pointless; it is a dead end. Besides, North Korea has not only medium-range missiles and nuclear weapons, we know they have that, but they also have long-range artillery and multiple rocket launchers with a range of up to 60 kilometres.

It is pointless to use missile defence systems against these weapons. There are no weapons in the world that can counteract long-range artillery or multiple rocket launchers. And they can be located in such a way that they are virtually impossible to find.

In this context, military hysteria will do no good, but may lead to a global, planet-wide disaster and enormous casualties.

Diplomacy is the only way to solve the North Korean nuclear problem.

[...] We need to know, O my (dear) brothers and sisters, that the opposing (US-Israeli) project in the region is crumbling and falling apart, and that US and Israeli dreams that were built on Daesh and its sisters and fellow takfiri and terrorist groups, these dreams and hopes collapse, and that the Axis of Resistance is the one who inflicted a defeat on this project, with the help of Russia, to be quite frank and honest. 

And as with any victory, there is a price (to pay). If you lose, the price (to pay) is clear. But even when you win, there is a price to pay (but way less than when you lose). It is natural that the victorious Lebanon will be subjected to pressures. And the same for the Resistance, which certainly is subject and will be subject to (even more) pressures.

Today, a huge (propaganda) machine works (day and night) to present Hezbollah as a threat, a destructive group, a problem (you), the Lebanese, the Lebanese people must try to resolve. Tomorrow, they will create you a (new artificial) problem now that we are done with Daesh and Al Nosra. Someone cynical might say: so that your turn does not come, you should let Daesh and Al-Nosra (stay in Lebanon); why are you in a hurry (to finish them off and become thus again the main target of USA)? If one wants to think cynically. But if we think about the national interest, people's safety, our loved ones', their happiness and their tranquility, we think differently.

So the Americans will return once again and say for the benefit of Israel: "O government, State, parties and people of Lebanon, you have a (major) problem called Hezbollah. How are you going to solve it? Hezbollah's power increases (by the day), the accumulation (of weapons)... " It is you who are talking about the increase of our power. "His power grows, he can do well and prepare, etc. This is a (big) problem. We must solve it." But they want to resolve it in the interest of whom? In the interest of Israel. Certainly not in the interest of Lebanon.

Hezbollah does not represent a danger, neither for Lebanon nor the Lebanese people, nor the Lebanese State. Certainly, Hezbollah is a danger to the Israeli occupation, Israel's appetites, and American hegemony and the takfiri project. So we will be under pressure. And we will be presented as the danger, when in truth it is indeed the United States that constitute the danger today. It is this administration, the Trump administration that is the danger. 

Who is it who is currently bringing the world to the brink of a global nuclear war with North Korea? Today (the fate) of the world is suspended between two people, regardless of what one thinks of the one and the other: Trump and Kim-Jong-Un. The fate of the world lies in the hands of these people. God knows what they will do. How will they act, where will they lead the world, God only knows. This is the real danger.

Today, the Trump administration led the relations with Russia at the worst level, and relations with China at the worst level, they are on the brink of war with China, as a result of tensions in the South China Sea. The continuous threats of war against Venezuela, the relaunch of the war in Afghanistan, threats to cancel the nuclear agreement with Iran, rekindling the inter-Arab disagreements... Are there people (gullible enough) to believe that the crisis between the Gulf States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE (and Bahrain also) on one hand, and Qatar on the other hand, the United States are not able to resolve it? By God, they can resolve it in an hour, half an hour, a wink from Trump or his entourage, and the crisis would be resolved. No ! The United States wants these struggles, these wars, etc. 

They are the ones who represent the danger. This administration, this mentality that wants to reinstate the hegemony and monopolize the oil, money and gas, and to protect Israel, (who is now) worried and scared. It is they who are a danger, not Hezbollah. 

Today, the continuation of the war against Yemen, and the intensification of the assault, especially in recent weeks, the horrible massacres committed by the Saudi air force against unarmed Yemeni civilians, and we can only condemn it. This war is an American war par excellence. If the United States wanted this war to stop, it would stop in half an hour. This is not an issue for them. 

Those who represent a threat to the region today are the United States. Even Pakistan, a US historic ally, this administration has lobbied hard on them, insulted their army, insulted their people and insulted their State, and that's why they demonstrated by the millions in the last few days to protest against US policy, American bullying and insults against Pakistan and the Pakistan Army. 

Who is giving free rein to Israel in the region, if not the US? And more dangerous, we may be faced with the formulation of a new American policy to impose a new model after the end of Daesh, a new model of terrorism, under new titles, new names and new slogans. 

We must face these pressures, whatever they are and wherever they come from. How to cope as Lebanese? It is through steadfastness, convergence and unity that we will overcome this stage. [...]

Quelqu'un de cynique pourrait nous dire : pour que votre tour ne vienne pas, laissez (subsister) Daech et Al-Nosra (au Liban), pourquoi êtes-vous pressés (d'en finir avec eux et de redevenir la cible principale des USA) ? Voilà si on veut réfléchir de manière cynique. Mais si on pense à l'intérêt national, à la sécurité des gens, de nos proches, à leur bonheur et à leur tranquillité, on réfléchit différemment. 

Les Américains vont donc revenir à la charge et dire, au service d'Israël : « O gouvernement, Etat, partis et peuple libanais, vous avez un problème (majeur) qui s'appelle le Hezbollah. Comment comptez-vous le résoudre ? Le Hezbollah, sa puissance qui augmente (de jour en jour), l'accumulation (d'armes)... » C'est vous qui parlez de l'augmentation de notre puissance. « Sa puissance qui grandit, ce qu'il peut bien faire et préparer, etc. Cela constitue un (gros) problème. Nous devons le résoudre. » Mais ils veulent le résoudre dans l'intérêt de qui ? Dans l'intérêt d'Israël. Certes pas dans l'intérêt du Liban.

Le Hezbollah ne représente pas un danger, ni pour le Liban, ni pour le peuple libanais, ni pour l'Etat libanais. Certes, le Hezbollah représente un danger pour l'occupation israélienne, les appétits d'Israël, et l'hégémonie américaine, ainsi que le projet takfiri. Nous serons donc soumis à des pressions. Et on nous présentera comme le danger, alors qu'en vérité ce sont bien les Etats-Unis qui constituent aujourd'hui le danger. C'est cette administration, l'administration Trump qui constitue le danger. 

Qui est-ce qui met actuellement le monde au bord du gouffre d'une guerre nucléaire mondiale avec la Corée du Nord ? Aujourd'hui, (le sort) du monde est suspendu entre deux personnes, indépendamment de ce qu'on pense de l'un et de l'autre : Trump et Kim-Jong-Un. Le sort du monde est entre les mains de ces deux gens-là. Dieu seul sait ce qu'ils vont faire. Comment ils vont agir, où est-ce qu'ils vont mener la planète, Dieu seul le sait. Tel est le véritable danger.

Aujourd'hui, l'administration Trump a amené les relations avec la Russie au pire niveau, et les relations avec la Chine au pire niveau, au bord de la guerre avec la Chine, en conséquence des tensions en mer de Chine méridionale. Les menaces de guerre continues contre le Venezuela, le renouveau de la guerre en Afghanistan, les menaces d'annulation de l'accord nucléaire avec l'Iran, l'attisement des discordes inter-arabes... Y a-t-il quelqu'un (d'assez crédule) pour croire que cette crise entre les pays du Golfe, entre l'Arabie Saoudite, les Emirats (et le Bahreïn aussi) d'une part, et le Qatar d'autre part, les Etats-Unis ne sont pas capables de la régler ? Par Dieu, ils peuvent la régler en une heure, une demie-heure, un clin d'oeil de la part de Trump ou de ses proches, et cette crise serait réglée. Non ! Les Etats-Unis veulent ces luttes, ces guerres, etc. Ce sont eux le danger. 

Cette administration, cette mentalité qui veut réinstaurer l'hégémonie et s'accaparer le pétrole, l'argent et le gaz, et protéger Israël, (qui est aujourd'hui) inquiet et apeuré. Ce sont eux qui représentent un danger, pas le Hezbollah. Aujourd'hui, la continuation de la guerre contre le Yémen, et l'intensification de cette agression, surtout durant ces dernières semaines, les massacres horribles perpétrés par l'aviation saoudienne contre des civils yéménites désarmés, et qu'on ne peut que condamner. Cette guerre est une guerre américaine par excellence. Si les Etats-Unis voulaient que cette guerre cesse, elle cesserait en une demi-heure. Cela ne (leur) pose aucun problème.

Ceux qui représentent une menace pour la région aujourd'hui, ce sont les Etats-Unis. Même le Pakistan, l'allié historique des Etats-Unis, cette administration a exercé de fortes pressions sur eux, a insulté leur armée, a insulté leur peuple et a insulté leur Etat, et c'est pourquoi ils sont sortis par millions il y a quelques jours pour manifester contre la politique américaine, l'intimidation américaine et les insultes américaines au Pakistan et à l'armée du Pakistan. 

Qui donne le champ libre à Israël dans la région, si ce n'est les Etats-Unis ? Et plus dangereux encore, nous sommes peut-être face à la formulation d'une nouvelle politique américaine visant à imposer un nouveau modèle après la fin de Daech, un modèle nouveau de terrorisme, sous de nouveaux titres, de nouvelles dénominations et de nouveaux slogans. 

Nous devons faire face à ces pressions, quelles qu'elles soient et d'où qu'elles viennent. Comment y faire face en tant que Libanais ? C'est par la persévérance, la convergence et l'unité que nous parviendrons à surmonter cette étape. [...]
